Artisan Wara Warmis

Founded by Spanish conquistadors five centuries ago, the city of La Paz, Bolivia is nestled two miles above sea level in the great Andes Mountains. Known as the city in the clouds, La Paz is home to descendants of the Inca people and boasts a rich tradition of indigenous artisanship.

Unfortunately, years of political turmoil and inflation have brought widespread poverty to La Paz and its surrounding areas. Employment opportunities are scarce, especially for women. Many work as farm laborers, and their families barely subsist on their meager wages.

To create a better future for themselves and their children, a group of these workers came together in 1990 to found Wara Warmis, an artisan group that makes festive, one-of-a-kind toys and handicrafts. Today the group is eighteen members strong and markets its products throughout Bolivia and in the U.S.

In addition to the supplemental income their creations provide, the artisans of Wara Warmis have found a new sense of self esteem and independence.

Member Carmen Fernandez says her work has enabled her to give her children a much higher quality of life. "I support my family with my products and I am really proud of them, my coworkers and myself," she says.

The GreaterGood Network is proud to carry Wara Warmis' handmade Recycled Fabric Scrap Ornaments, a festive testament to the power of new beginnings.
