Provide Life Skills & Education to Girls in Zambia
When girls learn, the whole community benefits. Educated girls earn higher wages and boost economic growth; are more likely to have smaller, healthier, and better-educated families; and are less likely to contract HIV.
However, girls are still less likely to go to school than boys and more likely to drop out before completion. Gender disparity in education is particularly acute in the developing world. A disproportionate number of the 71 million out-of-school children are girls, and over two-thirds of the world's 759 million illiterate adults are women. While the number of girls in school has increased in the last decade, there are still far too many who are excluded.
In sub-Saharan Africa the situation is extreme. An estimated 54% of girls do not complete primary school, let alone advance to a secondary education level. Zambia has been plagued by droughts and floods, displacing families and damaging schools. HIV/AIDS impacts girls' access to education and also spreads twice as fast among uneducated girls in the country compared to those with some formal schooling. Other major barriers include gender stereotypes and cultural constraints, long distances to schools, health and sanitation issues, violence and discrimination, and an absence of role models.
Room to Read's Girls' Education program is working to meet these challenges in Zambia.
You can help. For as little as $25, you can help make sure girls in Zambia are able to attend and stay in school. Here are examples of what your donation through this Gift That Gives More (TM) supports:
- A Great Excuse to Skip that New Sweater: $25 can buy school uniforms for four girls. Sometimes the barrier to education is something as simple as appropriate clothes for school. Room to Read's Girls' Education program helps keep girls in school by providing school supplies, uniforms and transportation, along with tutoring, adult mentors and other support to equip them with skills to navigate key life decisions.
- Literacy on Two Wheels: $50 can provide a bicycle for a girl. School can often be a 2 to 3 hour walk from home along remote roads, making school an impossibility for millions. A bicycle can cut that time down dramatically.
- Home Away From Home: $100 can provide two months of boarding for a girl. Many girls live miles from the nearest school, and boarding allows girls to attend school daily.
- Gender Equality in Education: $250 can fund an entire year of girls' education.
Room to Read focuses on equalizing the secondary school experience for girls as a means to improving gender equality in education.
Since 2008, Room to Read has provided academic, material, and life skills support to 200 girls in Zambia and over 10,000 globally.
