Help end the cycle of poverty for young Afghan girls: give them the empowering gift of education.
Before the opening of the Zabuli Education Center in Afghanistan, girls in area villages had no way to obtain even the most basic, formalized education. In 1996, the Taliban regime outlawed the education of girls and women. In 2001, after the Taliban were overthrown, the Afghan government, with the help of international aid agencies, began to slowly rebuild the education system. However, illiteracy remains prevalent and the education of girls still lags markedly behind the education of boys.
The Zabuli Education Center in Deh' Subz , Afghanistan was opened to help break the cycle of poverty through access to an education in a very poor area. By providing these girls with an education, an environment is being created that can protect them from the vicious cycle of poverty, malnutrition, and hunger. Eight new classrooms were added to the Zabuli Education Center to accommodate the growing number of girls enrolling in the school. The girls need desks and chairs to learn in a safe, nurturing environment.
This Gift That Gives More helps provide educators and their students with the essential tools they need to function in a thriving, engaging learning environment every day. Just $20 provides a desk and a chair for a girl at the Zabuli Education Center in Deh' Subz, Afghanistan.Report from the Field
The most recent grant provided desks and chairs for five girls. One of these girls, Husna, is 18 years old and in the 12th grade. She enjoys exercising and wants to become a psychologist when she grows up. Her greatest wish is for peace and stability in Afghanistan so that she can continue her education.
