Help us respond to the refugee crisis and children forced to flee their homes by supporting Project Amal ou Salam ("Hope and Peace").

Since the conflict began in 2011, intense fighting in Syria has driven over 8.4 million refugees to seek safety in neighboring countries. Over half of these people are children. Often escaping the violence on foot in the dark of night. These children face grave threats to their life and the constant struggle for food, clean water, healthcare and education continues to worsen by the day. No one knows when these refugees will be able to return to their homes.

Project Amal ou Salam is providing exceptional leadership through educators for a generation of children who desperately need it. Each day Project Amal ou Salam and GreaterGood supports 850 Syrian refugee children and a total of 4,800 children over the last 3 years.

You can help! Your donation of $7.20 gives the gift of education to 12 refugee children! As recent policies have made it even more difficult for Syrian refugees to find stability and safety, now is an important time to make an incredible difference. Join us, as we strive to educate these children at a pivotal point in their lives.

"Children are the only hope now left for Syria" — Nousha Kabawat, Founder, Amal ou Salam.

Make your donation of $5 or more an ongoing gift by checking the "Make this a Monthly Gift" box before adding it to your cart, and you will help the people of Syria each and every month.

Project Amal ou Salam is a volunteer-run, grassroots organization that works with Syrian refugee children. Project Amal ou Salam believes that every child has the right to an education, to a childhood free from trauma and violence, and to the hope of a peaceful tomorrow.

Meet Omar! Omar is one of the incredible children that your donations helped. Omar is one of the young children who attends the Amal ou Salam School in Jerash, Jordan as part of our program for pre-school and kindergarten aged children to give them a head start on their education. Omar and children his age, are able to learn the fundamentals needed for their education and prepare to attend school regularly with their Jordanian peers. For many children Omar’s age, living as a refugee in Jordan is all he has known. The ongoing stress and trauma he faces puts him at a disadvantage to his Jordanian peers which can result in poor grades, difficulty coping with the rigors of a school setting, depression, anxiety, and acting out. The focus on early childhood education prepares him to attend and succeed in the Jordanian schools he will enter in just a few short months.

“My name is Omar and I am six years old. I am a Syrian from Damascus, but now I live with my mother, father, and two brothers, in Jordan. I go to study at the Amal ou Salam School in Jerash where I learn to read and write and count and learn everything I need with my friends. We draw, color, and play with play doh and toys too. My favorite things are when we learn singing and acting and put on shows or go on field trips. The Amal ou Salam team and our teachers take us to parks and pools and to the amusement park. I am very happy at the Amal ou Salam School.”

Thanks to YOUR donations Project Amal ou Salam was able to successfully provide pre-kindergarten and early childhood education programming for hundreds of children like Omar. Ages ranged from 6 years and younger, and after-school tutoring to older children (aged 7-16) for refugee children from Jordan, Syria, Turkey & Lebanon. The funds allowed the school to continue operations for the second half of 2017 and will continue to support the school into 2018. Through the grant, activities were possible to support both age groups of children, providing a local space for them to learn and grow in a safe and supportive environment. Working with teachers and Project Amal ou Salam volunteers and coordinators, the children were able to benefit from special programming and personal attention. Special events around holidays allowed the school to serve as a family gathering point and foster positive relations with the local community and provide positive experiences for the children. Additional programming in Jordan included material and transportation support for children with special needs to attend school in Irbid. The grant received in June also supported the Amal ou Salam workshops in Lebanon in August, 2017. This consisted of orientation and debriefing sessions for more than 30 volunteers, a career day for approximately 50 Syrian youths aged 15-17, and 3 full workshop days with approximately 600 children aged 5-15 living in Shatila or the Bekaa Valley. Costs include transportation, meals for the children and volunteers, and all materials. Project Amal ou Salam’s workshops provide open dialogue, giving the kids a safe space to tackle the issues that they face and develop their own ideas and visions for the future of Syria. With activities not present in the refugee camps, our workshops for Syrian refugee children arm them with the tools and confidence to rebuild Syria through art, health, photography, sports and music.
