Teacher or Nurse
Girlie Ganton belongs to the B'laan tribe of Polomolok, South Cotabato in the Phillippines. She lost her mother due to illness and her father is illiterate and unable to provide for their large family, so Girlie and her sister Leah were sent to the Haven of Hope Orphanage. She has now joined her sister at Holy Cross Academy this school year so she can receive a quality education at a private school. If she can attend a private high school, she will be one step closer to fulfilling her dream of becoming a teacher.
The Importance of Education
The Transition House—where Girlie calls home—has served as a crucial stepping stone for young women living there to properly transition into adulthood. This home provides girls with basic living essentials and the opportunity to receive a private school education in the Philippines. One common barrier to opportunities that Filipino young women face is getting pregnant are far too young of an age. In fact, according to a 2013 National Demographic and Health Study (NDHS), one in ten young Filipino women age 15 to 19 is already a mother or pregnant with their first child. These rates are significantly higher in girls coming from lower socioeconomic status than those attending private school.
The graph (shown right) highlights the fact that Filipino women aged 15-24 are over twice as likely to have a child if they only have a elementary education versus a college degree. Early childbearing forces young women—particularly those from lower socioeconomic status—to drop out of school to raise their child. In the Philippines, private school education is the best option for girls to reach their fullest potential.
The eight girls who live at the Transition House all come from lower class backgrounds. Thanks to your support, they have been given an opportunity to attend private school. We are happy to report that among the eight girls living in the Transition House, not one has become pregnant! These girls are grateful to have role models in their life that can help them make responsible decisions. We look forward to continued success from girls receiving help from Seeds of Dignity!
With your help, we can send Girlie to school for a year! Your donation will help provide her with a year of tuition, a uniform and school supplies.
