Entering Secondary School
"My Period Keeps Me a Class Apart"
During Girls' Voices workshops girls are asked to share their hopes and dreams, and their barriers to attending school. They then create videos to express their experiences with the world. For many girls, sharing their story is a life-changing experience, helps to build the confidence they need to navigate the challenges of adolescence. For Jiya, a significant barrier to attending school is the taboo surrounding her menstrual period. She shares the realities of her period, bravely expressing her physical discomfort, and her desire to continue to go to school despite her experience.
In Nepal, approximately 30 percent of girls miss school each month as a result of their periods. According to Her Turn reports 41 percent of girls who do not attend school when menstruating stay home because they do not have privacy for cleaning and washing at school. We are proud of Jiya for creating a video that raises awareness about this important topic. We know that it shows her determination to continue to go to school, and her great ideas for how girls in her community can receive more support. We want to make sure that Jiya can complete her education, express her views, and receive the support she needs. School in Nepal only costs $80 a year, and yet Jiya's family can't afford it.

You can help. For just $15.00, you can send Jiya to school for one month. Help us reach our goal to send all of the Voices of Women students to school for a year!
About Girls Voices:
Girls' Voices is a signature program of GreaterGood.org intended to raise funds for girls' secondary education through media made by girls. Our goal is for girls around the world to connect to their voice, their dreams for their education, and use the power of digital media to create images, stories, and visual metaphors that can communicate their strength and potential to the world. The intention of this project is to empower girls to utilize videography and to raise funds, 100% of which will directly contribute to scholarship funds for girls facing financial barriers to completing secondary education.
VOW Media wants to contribute to a world where women and young girls enjoy their basic rights and live with dignity, equality, and justice. They are a non-profit organization that is committed to providing women and young girls from marginalized communities with innovative media tools to enable them to voice their own lives, to empower them and strengthen their voices. The advancement of women in society can be fostered by the creation of a positive self-image and a stronger sense of identity through the use of art, media, and education. They believe that personalizing women's individual experiences can stop violence inflicted on them, change social norms and end discrimination.
